Rant Time - People are the {expletive} WORST.

in #life4 years ago

Even though I am trying to pursue acting full time, I still gotta pay those bills, and acting is an expense in itself. I just dropped 40 bucks on 20 headshots, that I am just going to give away...in auditions where I will likely not land a role. Gross. That isn't the point of said rant. It sucks, but it still isn't the point.

I used to LOVE doing furniture.

I loved everything about it. Dumpster diving, thrift shopping, painting, sanding, hammering, refinishing. I love working with my hands (as I mentioned in my last post) and doing that kinda stuff is just kind of in my blood I guess.

However as I have made it a full time business, I have grown to utterly hate people.

Everyone is suddenly an expert at stuff they know nothing about.

Today especially just really made me crazy.

I found this MCM dresser, from like the 1950s. It was cute and had potential, but was terribly damaged. In the 50s it was popular to put on a thin strip of veneer on top of the wood, and it made it easy to care for, but a nightmare if you wanted to refinish it. I would never attempt to strip an old dresser like that down to bare bones, only to refinish the wood.

A. - Because only a small group of people like barewood stuff.

B. - Because an even smaller group of people would actually PAY what it would cost to do that.

When I am flipping furniture, the name of the game is, how quickly and reasonably can I get this piece in shape to sell?

Bottom line is, no one wants to pay much for furniture, so it is best to keep your work to a minimum.

So the above is the outcome I got from about 5 hours of work. I had to find the piece, haul it home, sand it, drill new hardware holes, paint the hardware, paint the dresser and put the hardware on.

I am charging $225 for this piece, which is actually quite reasonable.

So of course, an expert comes on to my FB business page today and exclaims "How could anyone paint such a beautiful dresser? I am SO SAD right now."

Funny, this person is following the page, but has never bought anything from us, and has made unscrupulous comments before about how we have handled furniture. I just surpassed 1k followers, it's not like I have millions of customers, and it's like Amazon where your review gets buried and you can say whatever you'd like. Comments like this hurt my business, and they are dumb because she wouldn't have bought the dresser if I had restored it to its original wood shape, or if I had just sold it as is, for practically nothing.

She sure is a great armchair opinionist though.

If you are one of those people...stop. Right now. Stop. The world hates you, and so do I.

Anyway, have a good night!

Bitcoin is almost at 9k! Hooray!

lol the customer is always right but it doesn’t mean they are the right customer! I don’t know they people are compelled to give their advice without knowing half the facts but I wouldn’t pay it much attention!

These people don’t know why it’s like to run businesses so all they can do is run their mouths to make themselves feel as if they are contributing

Good luck with your business and your acting

Thanks! Customers have definitely turned me into more of a pessimist!

Lol they tend to do that sometimes but every so often you meet someone who is reallt greatful you for your services and it makes it worth it along with the bump in your bank account

Looks good to me. Yep, I was starting to do well with my Computer repair biz, but got so sick of dealing with jackassery I called it quits, it wasn't worth the trouble. Cheapskates, complainers, and "experts" are the worst. I still have some good folks I do work for, but it is on a limited basis.
