Love can be very painful if you are with someone incompatible.

Love can be very painful if you fight all the time.

Love can be very painful if your loved one is an abuser.

The reason love is painful in those situations is that your love is tying you to a horrible situation.

Love can also hurt when a relationship ends. The reason it hurts then is because endings with loved ones are like all endings of things you love: you miss them, you long for what was. It's hard.

But love isn't always painful. If you always find it painful, perhaps you could try to figure out why that is so and then change that. But no, love isn't always painful.
