Biogas from waste: Mini plant for domestic use
A company from Israel is building eco-friendly mini-biogas plants for their homes that can be used to easily produce gas in their own garden.
The Israeli start-up HomeBiogas has developed a biogas plant that can be easily installed in front of or next to the house. The idea behind it: Everyone can produce biogas themselves, heat a gas stove and use other gas-powered appliances.
With a kilo of waste, the biogas plant produces energy to cook for an hour.!
Biogas from waste: This is how the plant works
The biogas tank of the plant is initially filled with almost 650 liters of water. Then the organic waste is added. The mini biogas plant works as a continuous flow system: The biogas is produced by the bacteria in the water decomposing the waste.
So that unpleasant odors and toxic gases do not escape to the outside, the generated gas is finally filtered. As a by-product, biogas production also produces liquid fertilizer. The owners can also fertilize their garden.
5 facts about the mini-biogas plant:
-The biogas plant is set up in a maximum of two hours.
-The plant only needs a total of two square meters of space.
-After one to three weeks biogas flows for the first time.
-Up to six liters of food leftovers - including meat and dairy products - become biogas in the mini-plant.
-The plant costs about 1,500 US dollars. As part of a crowdfunding campaign, it is currently available for just under $ 1,000.
The biogas plant for private use is actually a small revolution. Because the initial costs are low and handling easy. The only downside so far: The system currently works only in warm areas. To produce biogas, the system requires an average day-night temperature of at least 17 degrees Celsius. However, the team at HomeBiogas is already working on the development of a cold weather variant.
