What I see happening is Authoritarianism
I have said for 45 years that politics in the USA are ruled by the same crowd whipsawing us from one side to the other while constantly increasing the restriction of our Liberties.
The effect is that we desperately pull from one side to the other, while cutting down the tree of liberty as a side effect.
They do this to us. We are not really fighting KKK or BLM, Antifa or Nazis, we are doing the work of the oligarchs who control the story. Between the Government, corporations and media we are brought to work against each other, pulling back when the "other side" pushes, pushing when they pull back. Destroying each other in the process.
Republicans impose restrictions on personal life in one cycle, then Democrats impose restriction in public life in the next cycle. The problem is that neither side takes away the previous restrictions at any point. For example, Obama re-signed "The Patriot Act". Trump has not removed it either (OK, "yet". But don't hold your breath).
Now the cycles are bigger and stronger than they were in the past. The reactionary Press around things that concern less than 0.01% of the human race is staggering. How can these things destroy our Liberties?
But in the 60s they drastically changed society. "Anti-racism" changes required that everyone identify on all forms by race. How can that be right? It led to the identity politics of today.
I anticipate major "pushback" legislation to prevent "Alt-Right violence". More censorship of your personal choices, your words, your affiliations. The opposite side of when Reagan and Bush imposed restrictions on travel and privacy.
But this is the point. It's the opposite side of the same thing. It's authoritarianism.
The same Elites in their gated homes are hedging us in from both sides. The American Dream is now "A secure job with benefits" instead of "Being your own boss". Most on the internet don't remember it any other way.
Sorry for the rant, I must be feeling my age. I can't help but remember, with great sadness, Kent State and "Four Dead in Ohio".

My personal response to this nonsense is to just spend whatever time I may have left creating and developing good things in the world, and ignoring all these a**h***s that think they have some right to run my life...

Hey @baerdric. I've been digging into the laws that deal with finances, banking, and cryptotrading. So far, what I've found is a mixture of what you're saying...
and what @everittdmickey is saying...
Thing about it is these bureaucracies don't spring up from nowhere. Typically, they're either put forth by unknown (oligarchs) or by vocal interest groups (ex. Mothers Against Drunk Driving). There are very real people who set about working to get bureaucracies in place and once they exist, that Iron Rule does come into play.

Essentially true. When I speak of Presidents I assume but neglected to say that they are simply tools of the oppressors. Those are faceless, unelected, unnoticed until they step on your neck.
But I believe that the "dark state" is being directed by deeper oligarchs who also direct corporations and media. Not overtly, but by gradual trends. No need for conspiracy, they just individually do what is in their best interests over generations, and that is to have us inconspicuously gelded and controlled.
Our current situation is little different than baronial feudalism, where all worked for the landowners and young men were sent out to kill each other (or strangers) occasionally, to prevent uprisings at home.

The fact of the matter is that each and EVERY time that Dunbar's number is exceeded that group begins to act according to the Iron Rule. They begin to act irrationally from an individual's point of view. They go nukin futz. The goals of the group are NOT the goals of the individual...in fact they are incomprehensible. Large groups are insane. (from our point of view) . For evidence to support that hypotheses...watch TV or read the news. Would sane people act that way?
