Article 1- New Year New You
New Year New You
Every year people make New Year Resolutions, and by the 30th or 60th day into the new year, they have lost steam and quit their resolution. Should we make a resolution or just treat the new year as any other day?
Goals are great to have. Planning is a great trait to have. But if you make a goal just because it is the trend... then it is more likely you will drop that goal or not put forth your best effort. Goals should be what you want and what will fill a certain space or need in your life. This is where we should look at our life like a spoke of a wheel. To have a balanced life each spoke needs to be in working condition. If one spoke is broken, then life is unbalanced. In terms of goals, the questions you could ask are:
- What in your life is unbalanced and needs to be re-balanced?
- What goal needs to be revisited?
- What goal just need fine-tuned?
Some areas that are a part of a balance lifestyle are:
• Health/Physical
• Emotional Health
• Meaning and Purpose: what gives you meaning and purpose in your life? That could be job, school, family, volunteer work.
• Community
• Healthy Relationships
Once you figure out your balance, then you will put more effort into your goals. Goals should be something you want to help you feel better about yourself or to add more to the life you already have. Sometimes we put too much importance into what society deems necessary as accomplishments or what is deemed actual goals but goals are what are personal to you not society. If your goal is to get your GED by the end of the year in order to give yourself more opportunities career wise, good for you. Or it could be just something you want to accomplish because you feel your life is unbalanced without your GED; fills the meaning and purpose spoke.
Have you sat down and just took 10 minutes to ask yourself, “Am I doing what I really want to do?” and if the answer is no, “What do I REALLY want to do?”. Brainstorming and being honest with yourself can help bring some clarity to what is missing in your life or what part of your life is unbalanced. Sometimes we get so caught up into just breathing and we forget to live. Yes, forget to live. Goals in the new year can be your new beginning to start living again and finding your balance. I am going to be honest, some goals leading to a balanced life will not be easy however, it will be worth it in the end. Let your New Year New You be about you. Your goals, your balance, yourself. Be selfish and start to do what brings a sense of peace and happiness to your life.
