Spinners who never give up and stay up to old age
.Sunlight entered through the gates, and an old man sat bare-chested in the courtyard of the house with a cotton roll in his hand. Pak Wayan Raji, a senior citizen in the Tenganan traditional village, has been a traditional yarn spinner for decades. And the Teachings of spinning threads that he had learned since the Japanese era were still engraved in Pak Wayan. His tenacity in work, and made him known and respected in the village where he lived.
So every morning as soon as the sun has appeared, Mr. Wayan begins to move. Cotton as the main ingredient in making yarn, indeed thrives in the garden next to his house. The threads he produces will later be used to weave Tenganan's typical Gringsing cloth. And this is what makes Pak Wayan more fortunate than other Gringsing fabric weavers, because not all Gringsing weavers can spin their own threads....
As we get older, the thread produced by Pak Wayan is not as much as it was when he was young and more powerful. Now he only spun yarn without any target having to produce how many rolls per day. His routine is now just a fill in his old days. Decades of dedication to something he has engaged in, unwittingly made himself an expert in spinning traditional threads.
Nobody knows exactly how old Mr. Wayan is at the moment, even he doesn't understand what date, month and year he was born. His memory had faded away, all that remained was the stories of the war era and how he began to learn to spin yarn.
With enthusiasm and enthusiasm, Mr. Wayan showed techniques for spinning traditional yarn. In front of the porch of his house, there were several wooden tools, piles of cotton seeds, and rolls of yarn that were spun for days. Without much words, Mr. Wayan immediately showed the first technique in spinning yarn. The cotton seeds just picked, must be separated and discarded, with a tool called nursery, it rolls cotton until the seeds are separated and leaves only cotton fibers. From there, he then sets or loosens cotton fibers while cleaning cotton from remaining seeds and dust. The tool used to set looks like an arc. Then after that, the cotton that was loose and clean was rolled with bamboo wood which had been mashed, the result was like a cocoon in bamboo. From each of the cotton rolls, the original yarn spinning technique is called the machining technique. At this stage, patience and accuracy are needed to produce threads of the same thickness.
As soon as the felt yarn is enough to make the smallest size of Gringsing cloth, then he gives the spinning yarn to the family to weave. It used to be that he was still weaving his own Gringsing cloth, but his limited power made him no longer able to weave.
Accompanied by his wife, he lived his simple life as a single thread spinner in Tenganan. In the midst of a growing yarn spinning industry, Pak Wayan still survives his profession without any burden or bond. He just wants to enjoy his old age until the end of life later by running something that is useful for the surrounding community
