Dutch man bets big on Bitcoin; sells everything and moves his family to a campsite!
Didi Taihuttu, a 39 year old resident of Netherlands, went all-in on the cryptocurrency gamble. He moved his family to the camp ground outside of Venlo after putting his house on the market along with other possessions including his car, motorbike, children's toys and other family consumables. He has a wife and 3 daughters and chosen to live a minimalist life for the next 4-5 years, and believes his short term lifestyle alteration will set them up for the long term. The possessions that remain include a television, a laptop, clothes, a drum and “some household stuff.” The house was reported to be sold for 85 BTC; BTC was trading at $3,700 at that time - at today's (Oct 13, 2017) rate of $5,700 he has already made a whopping $170,000 in a very small time.
Didi is not new to the cryptocurrency world; he used to mine Dogecoin and had significant investment in that altcoin. After struggling to pay his bills as his overall portfolio plunged he invested everything into Dogecoin, an emerging currency that, at first, did not perform well on the markets. "I've had a tremendous amount of it, but that coin was worth nothing. The portfolio that I had at the time was perhaps worth 200 euros," he told. Taihuttu has a history of major risk taking; this is not the first time he has sold it all and packed it in. In the summer of 2017 Taihuttu and his wife made the radical decision to sell everything in order to travel the world including 'all' his coins. The couple returned from a nine month world trip through Asia and Australia with their three daughters. The Taihuttu's visits included Angkor Wat in Cambodia, swimming with dolphins near Brisbane and relaxing on the beach in Thailand. However, during his travels he was advised to check in on his ailing currency shares – only to discover that the currency had soared to twenty times its previous worth.
"That Dogecoin made me realise again: There is something going on in the world," the entrepreneur said. "This is no coincidence, I thought. So I went back into it again."
"People will say, 'You're crazy,'" Taihuttu told a leading media company. "The Internet was a revolution for information. I think that Blockchain and cryptocurrency are revolutionising the monetary system. "In five years' time, everyone will say: 'We could have seen it coming'. I am responding to this change now," he said of his decision to take the huge gamble.
If bitcoin does continue to rise, Taihuttu says his goal would be to help people in poorer countries, and to spread the word about bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies to the countries he visits. And if bitcoin crashes and his dream ends?
