BACON for breakfast...MIND MANIPULATION?...sadly, yes!!!

Bacon for breakfast…mind manipulation?…sadly yes!!!

So, I realize many, many folks like bacon. Bacon makes everything taste better. It is fattening and usually fattening things taste good...and what is more American than a good breakfast of bacon and eggs?!? Did you know that this mainstay of the current American breakfast was a result of a marketing campaign? Yep. It’s true. Mr. Edward Bernays, (1891-1995) Austrian-born, and the nephew of Sigmund Freud was hired by the Beech-Nut Packing company back in the early 1920’s to promote their pork business. Mr. Bernays learned that folks were eating a very light breakfast…juice and a roll…so he chatted with his doctor, and the good doctor concurred that it would be beneficial for Americans to eat a heartier breakfast.

The doctor sent out letters to about 5000 other doctors (at no expense to the doctor of course...that was paid by Mr. Bernays as part of his costs to Beech-Nut) and everyone agreed…yes, eat bacon and eggs…it’s great for you! Of course bacon sales went up and Beech-Nut was very happy and the Americans had a new problem to worry about…high cholesterol! Well, now they could go to one of those 5000 doctors for help. See how it all works out?!

Yes, I agree bacon does taste great, but it does irk me to be manipulated at every turn. So…think about everything that is put in front of you by way of advertising…do you really want it? Do you really like it? Do you really need it? Maybe the answer is yes and that’s great, I just ask that folks think first…don’t listen…trust your own judgment…on everything!

Will I give up bacon…probably not…my favorite sandwich is peanut butter and bacon…hey doesn’t be grossed out…try it…it’s yummy I promise!!!
