It is common that when any person bought a new vehicle, a temporary number is given to that vehicle. But when such temporary number is not given to the person, then A/F is written on the number plate of that vehicle. Now the question arises that why it is written on the number plate of that vehicle?

A/F here means ‘APPLIED FOR’. It means that the owner of the vehicle applied for the new number. And till the time to get the permanent number, the owner of that vehicle has to write A/F on the number plate of that vehicle. RTO only gives this concession to the owner till the owner gets its permanent number for that vehicle. And normally the permanent number is given to that person within seven days of its application.

If even after getting the permanent number, the vehicle owner writes the A/F on the number plate of that vehicle and didn’t writes it permanent number, then its an crime. For this crime the person shall be punished with Imprisonment or Fine.
