Genetically Modified Animals Can Glow With Jellyfish DNA Inserted Into Them, As Well As Ice Cream!
Life is strange… isn’t it?
Glow in the dark animals might sound a bit like something out of a science fiction movie, but they actually exist, and are extremely interesting. The majority of people have no idea that something like this is even possible. They are so involved in their day to day life that they have no real clue how fast technology is advancing. This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to genetically engineering animals. Try to imagine what else could potentially be possible.
In 2009, the first glow in the dark dogs were created at Seoul National University. These dogs are considered to be the world's first transgenic dogs, and glow red when put under fluorescent light. One of the most important things to take away from this information is that the genes can be passed on to the next generation of offspring. This was not a temporary modification for a single animal, and is actually pretty groundbreaking. A few years later scientists were able to successfully control the new attribute by turning it on and off at will. Here is an example of what they look like.
Not only can dogs and rats glow, but other animals can too. You have the pig, sheep, fish, monkey, cat, rabbit, human, and more. (Just kidding about the human...for now.) This is made possible by injecting these animals with jellyfish proteins. Scientists say that this kind of technology could be used to help cure diseases in the future. Basically, cancer cells, toxins, and genes are all much easier to pinpoint when glowing. This will eventually help with the creation of more effective medicines and therapies. STOPI love the picture very much! It is really interesting to put all the glowing protein in animals. Glowing chemistry is always my favorite and chemist had been trying to develop various small molecule to achieve the same purpose :D
They are also working on putting DNA like this into plants. Imagine walking down the street where there are no streetlights, but instead glowing trees.
