Majoring on Minor
I have always wondered why most big companies sponsor programmes that add little or no values to the society and neglect programmes that would take us to greater heights, like education, academic competitions amongst others. I have seen someone who came first in a dancing competition win millions and I have also seen someone win an academic competition win a ruler, maths set, pen, bicycle or some few thousands. I learnt the winner of the popular Big Brother Naija show would be going home with a whooping sum of forty-five million naira! Why are things like this? We value sports more than we value education, we value dance competitions and singing competitions too. A footballer’s weekly salary is enough to pay a teacher’s lifetime salary, which tells what we actually value and want our young ones to value and Just like Dr Ben. Carson asked, I beg to ask, “What will solve our country’s problems, is it the ability to solve a quadratic equation, the ability to dance well or the ability to shoot a ball into the goal post?”
I think education is a broad subject and is not about developing the intellect only but also how to make use manual skills and other talents and I will say we need all for development of our nation. @admab
I agree with you sir, don't get me wrong, I definitely don't have anything against sports, entertainment and all, but the thing is we value all these things more than good quality education. Trust me I have seem a lot of instances.
And even if people would earn a living through sports, entertainment, etc, who says they can't still get good education before they venture into whatever they want to venture into.
