New Year Resolutions - How to not give up

in #life7 years ago

I will start off by wishing everyone a very Happy New year!

I want to talk about the resolutions we have for the new year.

I'm sure all of us have some goals in mind for the coming year and we're very motivated to reach our goals and resolutions. This is where the problem arises.

It all starts with self-doubt.

We reach a point where we understand that we need to make some positive changes in our life to make our life easier and healthier but we don't have the motivation to do that. The difference between wanting to and actually doing it becomes quite clear.

I don't know why but when we don't have the motivation to do anything we simply tell ourselves that: "I'll do this from tomorrow, for sure." But how many times has it happened that we actually do it? We simply keep skipping it because we just know that we have to do it but just KNOWING that you have to do something does not mean you will have the motivation to do so. We just skip it and never do it.

Motivation has to come from within. Even if you can motivate the person by telling him stories or showing him motivational videos, it still has to come from within.

The biggest mistake people do with this is, I think, making huge changes to their lifestyle. For eg. If a person has been smoking for most of his life and the idea to stop smoking comes to his head. He decides that 2018 would be a good year to quit smoking, all fine but then you cant cut off smoking in one single day. If he is a chain smoker and he's been smoking since forever, It's next to impossible for him to quit smoking in one day. Smoking is just an example I'm taking here, you can replace it with any habit or compulsion you have.

The point I'm trying to make here is that if you have a goal in mind, you can surely achieve that but not by making a huge change in your lifestyle. Instead, make minor changes which add up to a lot in the long run. For a smoker, you can try tapering your intake eventually and cut it off after a while. Doing this is more realistic than saying "I'm going to be a different man and I'm going to change it all." It simply does not happen and It's pointless to think that it works like that and you'll have motivation to do so.

Motivation only works if you really want to do it. You have to find a way to keep yourself motivated. That being said, I'm excited about hearing what kind of resolutions you have for yourself. Please feel free to comment your resolutions in the comments and I would love to hear what all you guys have to say. Good luck with making positive changes and hopefully you find ways to keep yourself motivated throughout the year.

Happy New Year from India!

Sort:

Yes! This makes so much of sense. The fact that motivation must come from within can be seen in the smallest case of waking up with an alarm clock. It only works if you truly want to. Otherwise no matter how hard you make it for yourself to switch it off, if you don't really want to wake up, you'll find a way out.

Happy new year mate
