Compulsive liars often use the same phrases when they are telling a lie. If you know their specific phrases and expressions, you’ll immediately be able to detect a lie.

Nobody always says the truth, but telling an innocent lie to protect someone, although it is not okay, is totally different from a lie told on purpose to hide important facts or to hurt someone.

To be honest

Someone who’s trying to lie to you will accentuate these words, while an honest person probably won’t use this expression.

They use too many details

Liars have to memorize a lot of details from their previous “stories”, so they usually end up giving too much details, trying to make their lie seem more real.

For example, a liar would say things like “It was exactly 8:15 when I looked out the window and I’ve noticed that the car had disappeared”. Not many people would remember the exact hour because they wouldn’t check the clock, so this detail can show that someone’s lying.

I never/I always

The words “never” and “always” are often deceptive. It’s almost impossible to act in a certain way every time. A liar will use this phrase in his conversations to seem more trustworthy.

They talk about others more than about themselves

They avoid responsibility, so you’ll often hear them say things about “him”, “her”, “them” or “us”, and you’ll rarely hear them say “me”.

Denial, justification and short answers

Lying person will reject blame immediately, even if no one said it was their fault. Also, they will try to explain why they acted in a certain way when nobody asked them why. They either use too much details, or they talk in short phrases to hide the truth.

Besides these 5 phrases they use, there are a few non-verbal clues that someone is a compulsive liar. They often touch their face, they play with their hair, they look straight in your eyes while their talking and they might keep their legs directed to the exit.
