This post straightly reminds me of Erich Fromm explanation in his phenomenal work "Escape From Freedom"... People are often left with feelings of hopelessness when they are freed from authority/government...and this happens in many areas of life...
And what happens if we try to debate or persuade them is just as what you already said: "they feel it is a personal attack on themselves."
