Tips to improve your learning skills

in #learn7 years ago

We’ve all experienced that feeling of boredom and frustration after we’ve repeated in our heads something that we had to learn, over and over again, but without any success.

What if our memory is not at fault, and we simply don’t know how to do it the right way? Here are some tips to help you learn…how to learn.

And by learning I don’t necessary mean doing your homework, these tips also apply to any kind of activity that requires study and discipline, those tips helped me a lot in my journey here, on Steemit.

Firstly, you should only move on to another idea or information after you’ve understood what you just read or did. If you jump from one information to another without focusing and understanding each one of them, you’ll later find out that you’ll have a lot of gaps and missing ideas.

It’s like trying to solve a math problem without the formulas, or like trying to promote a product without knowing what it does.

Another great thing you can do is to create connections between the things you’re learning, and the things you already know. It’s much more easier to memorize any information if you associate it with something that you are familiar with.

For example, if you’re trying to learn about hormones and you’re passionate about nutrition, you should try and connect those two, to see what they have in common. One of the biggest obstacles in the process of learning is finding the utility of the information you’re trying to assimilate.

Ask yourself “Why is it necessary for me to learn this? How is this going to help me?”. When you manage to answer those questions, you will find it easier to learn.

There is another important aspect when it comes to studying. The thing is, your mind is tricky and it might play some games. You should pay attention and notice the difference between understanding something and recognizing it. The fact that you recognize an information doesn’t mean that you understand it and that you know how, when or where to apply it.

Try to use the Pareto principle: you can obtain 80% of the results with only 20% of effort. Only select the important information, don’t get lost in the details. Even more importantly, prioritize what you have to learn.

In this way, you’ll have a clear order in which you have to study things and you’ll be able to create a scale of your progress.

Lastly, it’s important to expand your limits everyday, step by step, by giving 1% more than you gave the day before. Instead of spending 10 hours on a weekend working on something, you should work on it 20-30 minutes a day. With this kind of progression you’ll learn how to discipline yourself and you will evolve as a person.

Thank you for the intriguing post. I have a few genuine questions for you @jwolf.

  1. Can Steemit be a distraction as well?
  2. How much time must a person devote on it everyday?
  3. Must someone just focus on a few areas of tags to be successful?

I'm only 5 days young and very curious on what works and what is just a distraction. Thanks so much.

Blessings to you!

Mel @coachmelleow

Great question @coachmelleow I think steemit could be a great distraction if it doesn't help build a long term project. It solely depend on why you are on steemit.

Secondly, thinking about amunt of time to comit to steemit is a very big question. As I type this, I've been steeming for the past 2hours which is just too bad.

Lastly, I'm new on steemit as well but I think its not necessary to focus on few tags but I'd take it this way, if I've been a health advisor for over 40years, then of course; Steemit is a great platform to educate the world.

I am @healthylife

It's very difficult to avoid distraction but we have to do this for a better life

Never give up on your goals. Great post on learning skills. Steem On!

I have face this word DISTRACTION numerous time in my life when i started my online journey ive struggled almost a year (still struggling) to get rid of the things many times i thought to pack my bags & go to the mountain by leaving everything here only because its hard to keep you going when you don't see a single sign of success again this post remind me of my struggling days.

yeah i also need to improve my skills.. thanks budy .. your post is great as always:) keep it up @jwolf

Everyone encounters distractions, and the first important thing that you are doing, is being aware of your distractions. I suggest that you keep a little note pad and list each distraction that side tracks you. This just identifies them. If any one of them cause a significant distraction, then eliminate it and then see how your work is affected.

all of your post is always so informative,so i regularly follow your blog. love to read it...........

Let me add some more @jwolf, Skills such as speed reading and good comprehension are useful for all the great information we want to take in. And there are different ways to enhance our capabilities that would allow us to learn faster, better, and more effective

More so, learning is a skill and it can be greatly improved as you said. Everyone has the opportunity to develop her memory and learning ability. Identifying our own learning style and the methods that work for us is the key.

For instance, In the business world, the kind of learning that matters is that which increases our capacity for effective action. This usually involves accumulating specialized knowledge, skills, and as much self-confidence as it takes to believe in our effectiveness.

“You cannot teach a man or woman anything; you can only help them to find it within themselves.” Galileo.

“Just as eating against one's will is injurious to the health, so study without a liking for it spoils the memory, and it retains nothing it takes in.” Leonardo Da Vinci.
