The flowering dogwood, with the botanical name cornus florida, is a species of flowering tree in the dogwood family native to eastern North America and northern Mexico.

It is a small deciduous tree that grows to a height of 10 m and a trunk diameter of 30 cm.

The leaves are simple, opposite, ovate in shape, and the margins appear whole. They turn a deep reddish-brown color in the fall.

In the wild, this tree is usually common on forest edges and dry ridges.
