Spotted laurel, with botanical name aucuba japonica, is a shrub (1-5 m) native to China, Korea, and Japan.

It is also commonly called Japanese laurel, Japanese aucuba or gold dust plant (USA), and found growing in moist valleys, shrublands, riverbanks, and in rich forest soils near shady moist rocks.

The leaves are opposite, broadly lanceolate, about 5 to 8 cm long and 2 to 5 cm wide.

This plant is often considered an informal hedge, but can also be grown indoors for decorative purposes.
