Southern catalpa, whose scientific name is catalpa bignonioides, is a species of catalpa native to the southeastern United States that has brown to gray skin and hardy planks or ridges when mature.

Also called cigartree or Indian bean tree, it is a medium-sized deciduous tree that grows 15 to 18 meters tall with a trunk up to one meter thick.

The leaves are opposite, simple, large, bright green, and heart-shaped.

In the northern states of the U.S., this tree produces large white flowers in June or early July when the flowers of other trees begin to wilt.
