River Cane (Arundinaria Gigantea)

River cane, whose botanical name is arundinaria gigantea, is a species of bamboo also known as giant cane.

This plant is native to the south-central and southeastern United States.

It grows in pine forests dominated by loblolly, slash, longleaf, and shortleaf pine, and stands of oaks, cypress, ash, and cottonwood.

This bamboo, which is a type of cane, is a perennial herb with hollow, round stems that can grow to more than 7 cm in diameter and up to 10 m in height.

These cane communities occur mainly in floodplains, swamps, riparian forests, barren pines and savannas, and pocosins.
