Oriental bittersweet has scientific name celastrus orbiculatus. It is a woody vine in the family celastraceae.

This tree is also commonly referred to as Chinese bittersweet, as well as Asian bittersweet, round-leaved bittersweet, and Asiatic bittersweet.

It is native to China and is the most widespread species of celastrus in Japan and Korea.

When oriental bittersweet grows naturally, it forms a thicket. It propagates up to a height of 40 feet by wrapping around the trunk.

These vines surrounding the trunk have been known to strangle the host tree or break branches under their heavy weight.
