Japanese Cheesewood (Pittosporum Tobira)
Japanese cheesewood, scientifically known as pittosporum tobira, is a species of fragrant, flowering plant of the pittosporum family.
It is also known by several other names, including Australian laurel, Japanese pittosporum, and mock orange.
The tree is native to Japan, China, Taiwan, and Korea, but has spread throughout the world as an ornamental plant for landscaping and as cut foliage.
The genus name pittosporum is derived from the Greek words pitta (meaning "pitch") and sporos (meaning "seed"), referring to the resinous material surrounding the seeds.
The binomial name tobira is derived from its Japanese name, tobera, from tobira no ki which roughly means "tree of the door" .
