Bitternut hickory with botanical name carya cordiformis is a large pecan hickory with commercial stands located mostly north of other pecan hickories.

Also called bitternut or swamp hickory, it is a large deciduous tree up to 35 meters tall with a trunk diameter of up to one meter.

The tree grows throughout the eastern United States, namely in moist mountain valleys and swamps along riverbanks.

The leaves are pinnate, with 7 to 11 lobes, the apical leaf being the largest, but slightly larger.
