Cherry laurel, whose botanical name is prunus laurocerasus, is a species of evergreen cherry (prunus) native to southwest Asia and southeast Europe bordering the Black Sea.

Also known as the common laurel in North America and sometimes as the English laurel, it is a medium to medium-sized tall tree or evergreen shrub, 5 to 15 meters tall.

The tree should not be confused with its American relative prunus caroliniana, which is also called cherry laurel.

The leaves are leathery, dark green, glossy, and have finely serrated edges. They have an almond aroma when crushed.
