OK, here's a tip that a pro gave me when I was younger, for helping to remember how aperture affects depth of field. It doesn't really make sense scientifically but it helped me...
When you try really hard to see something, you squint your eyes and make them smaller. Similar to how if you want to have a good depth of field and see a lot of the scene in focus, you "squint" your lens aperture, or make it smaller (f22).
