SUP'in with the Seals

IMG_5034.jpg

Seals are an animal we see in Antarctica very often. It's no uncommon for us to paddle right by a group of them or have one swim up to our board. The seals we see the most are called Crabeater Seals. They are non threatening to us, they aren't like Leopard Seals that are predators. Crabbier Seals eat a diet of mostly Krill. When on the ice they are resting and can often be found resting on the ice with several other Crabeater Seals. You can tell them apart from other seals by the shape of their head with a dog-like snout, their coloring, and their scarring. Most of the time they seem pretty uninterested in us, but every once in a while one will lift their head to check out what's going on.

I think you have the best job in the history of the universe. I surfed with a seal once who had come over to say happy birthday to me..

That must be a great experience

wow, amazing. Where do you sleep when you stay in Antarctica?

We stay on an Expedition Cruise Ship. It holds about 100 passengers and 70 crew.
