The pigeon is a well—known bird that lives all over the globe, except in the polar and Antarctic regions.
Pigeons have a small head and a dense body with powerful flying muscles. The beak is short. When a pigeon is looking for food, it nods its head, "pecks" in time with its steps. The legs of birds are short, but strong, with prehensile fingers, because many of them climb branches perfectly. They collect food on the ground.
Pigeons are strong and hardy birds. A good mailman can reach speeds of up to 140 km/h, and they sometimes fly at distances of up to 3000 km. Pigeon mail was used even during the Second World War to deliver important messages.
