According to the tradition and culture of the Banyakole tribe who live in the Ankole area, southwest of Lake Victoria in southwestern Uganda, a virginity test of the bride and groom is mandatory before marriage. It is done by the bride's aunt (the groom's mother) and the groom's aunt (the bride's mother). If the bride passes the test, she has to learn how to please her husband sexually.
Every man has to have sex with the bride's mother before marriage, and during these acts she studies the son-in-law's sexual prowess, strength and his sexual tactics as well as favorite styles and conveys the son-in-law's wishes and desires to the daughter.
The wedding ceremonies of the people of Banyakole consist of several ceremonies known as "Kuhingira". At the end of the festivities, the bride's relatives and friends give her gifts of cows, food items and many other things to take away.
The people of this tribe value the virginity of women very highly and must refrain from premarital sex. If it is discovered that she is not a virgin before marriage, she is punished with death or ostracized from society.
