[Watch Talk] 예거 르쿨트르 리베르소의 역사/The history of the JLC Reverso

Hi everyone! Today I wanted to introduce you to The Reverso, made by Jaeger LeCoultre.
이번에 소개해드릴 시계는 예거 르쿨트르의 리베르소 라는 모델입니다.

먼저 사진 한번 보시겠습니다 ^^ (모델마다 자세한 외형은 다르지만 직사각형의 프레임을 가지고 있는것은 같습니다).
While the exact specifications vary by model, all the models do share the rectangular frame as well as a unique capability.

이 시계가 리베르소라고 불리우는 가장 큰 이유는요..
The watch is called Reverso because…

이런 식으로 시계를 뒤집어 끼울수 있기 때문입니다.
The watch face could be “reversed” in this way.

아까의 시계를 뒤집는다면..
So if we flip the watch we first saw..

여기까지만 보셨다면 “아니 이런 기능이 왜 필요해요?” 하고 물으실수도 있는데요,
이 시계의 역사를 알게되신다면 이해하실수 있을겁니다.
I’m sure you still might be wondering “so, why is this functionality so important?” And you would understand if you see the history behind Jaeger LeCoultre’s Reverso.

이 시계의 역사는 1930년대로 되돌아갑니다.
1930년대 초, 인도 주둔 영국 장교들은 격한 폴로 매치 이후 손상되어 있는 자신의 시계를 자주 보게 됩니다.
The history of the watch goes back to the early 1930s. The officers of the British Army in India playing polo, due to the somewhat aggressive nature of the sport, realized that their watches were easily damaged from playing the sport.

이 사진만으로 왜 장교들의 시계가 손상됬을지 알수 있으실겁니다. 딱딱한 나무 맬릿과 나무 공이 오가는 도중 실수로 스치기라도 하면 유리로 된 시계 앞면은 충분히 부서질수 있으니까요.
This picture should explain to you why their watches may be prone to damaging. Wooden mallets and wooden balls can easily damage the watches if they strike the watch face.

이 문제를 풀기위해 예거 르쿨트르가 내놓은 시계가 바로 리베르소 였습니다. 시계를 뒤집어 유리로 되어있는 부분을 숨긴다면 적어도 중요한 앞면이 손상되는것을 막을수 있었으니까요.
To address this problem the Reverso was created, as the probability of damaging the watch can be reduced by flipping the watch face and hiding the glass.
