엄지 발가락과 발등 사이 발가락 마디에 딱딱한 무엇인가 튀어나온 것을 버니언이라고 합니다. 엄지 발가락쪽에 생기는 버니언때문에 통증을 호소하시는 환자분들의 X-ray 이미지들을 동영상에서 볼 수 있습니다. X-ray 기술은 3차원으로 존재하는 물체를 2차원적으로 찍어놓은 그림자라고 볼 수 있습니다. 동영상에 나오는 처음 사진은 발등에서 아래로 찍은 view 이고, 나중에 나오는 사진은 발을 옆에서 바라보고 찍은 사진입니다. 의사들은 2차원으로 다른 view 의 X-ray 사진을 찍어서 3차원적으로 분석할 수 있습니다.

최근에 UK 에서 한 테크놀로지 회사에서 3D 스캐닝을 할 수 있는 기술을 발표했다고 합니다. 위에 사진이 그 기술을 사용한 발목을 스캔한 사진입니다. 이 기술을 통하여 환자가 평소에 신는 신발을 신고 평소에 사용하는 발목의 형태 그대로 스캔을 할 수 있게 되었습니다. 지금 위와 같은 경우는 하이힐을 신고 발목을 찍은 사진인데요, 기술을 통해 신발과 피부를 벗기면 (seal off) 뼈의 형태가 real life 에서의 모습으로 나타나게 됩니다. 동영상에서는 이런 경우 몸의 무게가 엄지 발가락 전에 앞의 두 tarsal 뼈에 쏠리는 것을 구조적으로 볼 수 있으며, 발목의 문제로 이어지는 것은 아주 명백하다고 합니다. 동영상에 나오는 연구 자료에 의하면 57% 의 여성들 중 자주 신는 신발로 인하여 발목에 통증을 호소한 적이 있다고 말합니다. 동영상에서는 우리는 흔히 발에 편한 신발을 찾기 보다 다른 사람들이 생각하는 신발의 모습에 맞춰 신발을 찾는데, 그런 패러다임은 변해야 할 것이라고 합니다.
