Smart contracts can be built on Bitcoin with technology developed by the RSK development team.

RSK is a sidechain that locks Bitcoins in a federated wallet. The wallet is entrusted to the RSK federation that is comprised of trusted community members such as respected exchanges.

When a Bitcoin is sent to a RSK wallet an equal amount of Smart Bitcoins are created. Smart Bitcoins can be used to not just built smart contracts but numerous things as well.

They are also used to pay miners for transactions and contract execution. RSK can also be used to create domain names & nicknames.

Creating a domain name is simple since it is similar to executing a EIP-137 which is a domain name smart contract on Ether.

The reason that a RSK domain name is similar to an Ethereum one is because contracts are also created using Solidity.

This makes it also possible to migrate any Ethereum project onto RSK. A developer could also create their own altcoin that will be secured by Bitcoin.

The network is able to process 300 transactions per second making it very effective. These transaction speeds are possible by using the gossip protocol which relays data to all nodes on the Rootstock network.
