제7편, 라틴어 단어 ‘한 개 -prehend’ 로 영어단어 50개 자동외우기

오늘은 -prehend - 라는 단어를 파헤쳐 보겠습니다. 

comprehend, apprehend, reprehend 그리고 이들의 변형인  comprehensive, apprehension, reprehensible, prehensile 등에 모두 들어있죠. 

prehend 하면 뭔가를 움켜잡는 행위를 생각하면 좋습니다. 그게 물리적으로 잡을수도 있고 생각으로도 잡을 수 있겠죠. 그래서 문맥에 따라 의미가 너무 광범위하게 바뀌는 단어로, 조금은 신경을 써야 할 단어입니다. 자주 쓰이니까요. 따라서 이 단어는 문장안에서 문맥을 보고 해석을 통해 연습해 보도록 하겠습니다. 

- comprehend 

com- 접두어 ‘함께, 다같이, 총괄적으로’ 움켜잡으니, 종합적이해를 의미합니다.

comprehension, comprehensive(종합적인), comprehensible(포괄적이해가 가능한)

1. After Jill’s accident, and while she was in hospital, her friend Jane talked to her and finally comprehended what had caused this terrible tragedy and what it meant for her family.

2. Mr. Smith explained the algebra assignment many times and finally the students comprehended how to solve the related mathematical problems. 

그럼, 유추 하나 해볼까요?

incomprehensibility 

여기서 in- 은 ‘not’ 의 의미입니다.  

- apprehend

a- 접두어는 방향성의 ‘to, toward’ 를 나타냅니다. ~쪽으로 움켜잡다.

1. "The police officer apprehended the robber just as he was leaving the scene of the crime."

apprehend 대신에 체포하다 arrest 를 쓸수도 있지만, action 이 더 리얼하게 느껴지시나요?

2. “It was easy for TV viewers to apprehend the sorrow and sadness that was expressed by the parents of so many children who died when the boat they were in turned over and sank in the water”

이럴때에는 육체적으로 잡는것이 아니라 생각/사고가 잡는 거죠. 그래서 (감정을) 절절하게 느끼다 라는 뜻이 됩니다.

apprehension

1. “The apprehension of the culprit(범죄자) was published in the local newspaper and soon all the neighbors knew who it was and were glad that he wasn't running around town anymore.”

이럴땐 물리적으로 포획, 체포, 잡는것, 을 의미합니다. 

2. “Even though the weather forecaster warned people not to drive because of the extremely slippery roads following the snow storm, Greg had to drive to work and so he was full of apprehension that he might have an accident on the way.”

3. “Many people have apprehensions regarding the coming times in the world because of the many continuous wars and terrorist attacks among so many countries.”

위의 2, 3번 문장에선 마음을 ‘잡는, 조이는,,, 그래서 약간은 공포”’ 의 apprehension 으로 쓰입니다. 

4. “Finally the moment of apprehension arrived when the students had their individual questions answered by the teacher.”

5. “Sometimes the lectures were very difficult to understand and the apprehension of the content was quite meager, but the students did their best anyway at believing what the professor said!” 

4,5 번에선 생각을 ‘잡는, 획득하는, 즉 이해’ 의 의미로 쓰였죠. 

apprehensive

1. “Peter felt most apprehensive about whether he passed his high school exams and could go to college in the fall.”

2. “Shirley was apprehensive about the potential of a severe snowstorm on the night of her concert recital.”

여기서도 1, 2 번은 마음을 ‘조이는’ 의미로 쓰입니다.
3. “Harry's apprehensive mind quickly analyzed the mechanical problem of the car.”

여기선 생각을 ‘잡는’ 의미로 쓰였고요

apprehender 

1. "In a short time, the policeman was praised for being the apprehender of the criminal."

뒤에 criminal 이 나오니 체포자, 획득한 자가 되겠죠

2. "Mark was the most qualified apprehender of the chemical process for the new medicine because no one else could come up with a product that is as good as his." 

생각이나 사고를 “획득한자’

- reprehend 

말그대로 해석하자면, 잡아(prehend) 되돌(re-)리다.

“If someone is reprehended,” 라고 한다면, 누군가가 잡아끌려 데리고 와졌다,,, 죠. 그렇다면 그 얘기는 심하게 비난받았다는 뜻이 됩니다.

 “Marge reprehended her son for not taking a bath after he got himself so muddy after he was playing in the backyard.”

reprehension (명사)

reprehensible (비난받을수 있는)

“Jimmy's reprehensible behavior in his biology class resulted in his being sent to the principal and staying after school to clean up the mess he made when he knocked the samples of poultry eggs on the floor.”

- prehensile

쉽게 잡을수 있는. 원숭이가 꼬리로 물건을 잡는 모양, 코끼리가 코로 먹을걸 잡는 모양을 생각하면 좋아요.

“Elephants have prehensile trunks that they use to grasp and to feed themselves by holding on to whatever it is that they want to eat.”

- misapprehend 

apprehend 를 못한것이니 이해하지 못하는 것 이지만, misunderstand, misconceive(제 강의 ceive 편 참조) 랑 그 느낌의 차이가 느껴지시나요?  

 "I fear you have misapprehended my intentions"
