Mustafa Tlass is a loyal follower of Hafes al Assad President of Syria.

He has served at least 30 years as defense minister.

Tlass included few exceptions in the Assad regime. He likes to talk and is very opportunistic.

Therefore he can survive long in the Syrian government.

Rising man born in Homs in 1932 is the elite of Syria is influenced by the factors of friendship and luck.

His name began to lift in 1963, shortly after Assad's coup.

Though many circles claimed he had no contribution whatsoever in the coup.

But Assad was very impressed with his contemporaries at the Syrian Miyun Academy.

By the time Assad undertook a "revolutionary correction" in Syria in 1970, the prestige of Tlass rose.

Two years later Tlass was appointed Minister of Defense.

Their relationship grew closer when Tlass was able to thwart the plan of Assad's brother Rifaat's coup in 1984.

Rifaat tried to grab a chance at Assad's heart attack.

The post of Defense Minister Syria was held by Tlass until 2004 and only ended when Bashar al-Assad boarded his father Hafes al-Assad as the Syrian leader.

Reasoning for rejuvenation, Bashar removed 72-year-old Tlass.

Although much assisted by friendship factor with Assad, Tlass is actually a capable military and politician.

He is the representative of Syria that bridges the negotiations between PLO leader Yasser Arafat and King Hussein of Jordan in disputes after the September Black event in 1971.

Before the Yom Kippur War erupted, Tlass had facilitated Assad visits and meetings with other Arab leaders, especially Egypt.

Tlass was also active in attracting Soviet support in the war.

In the Yom Kippur War, Tlass's achievements included a very proud one.

He had vulgarly killed dozens of Israeli soldiers with his hands on his own.

Energy Tlass like never runs out. He also uttered controversial remarks.

He had once ridiculed Yasser Arafat personally.

But he was very supportive of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, who wanted to attack Israel with a scud missile in the Gulf War I.
