The internet actually started as an experiment in the late 1960s by the United States Department of Defense. It was called ARPANET and was designed to allow researchers and defense specialists to communicate with each other in the event of a disaster that would destroy traditional communication methods like phone lines or postal mail. Over time, more people and organizations became connected to ARPANET and it evolved into what we know as the internet today.

The specific individuals credited with inventing the internet include Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn, who developed the TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) communication protocols that allow devices to communicate with each other across the network, and Tim Berners-Lee, who created the World Wide Web, which made the internet accessible and usable for the general public. It was the combination of these technologies that led to the internet as we know it today.
