International Community is currently promoting SDGs to enhance and fix all current social issues, including agriculture, food nutrition and hunger.
According to SDGs, agriculture lies in the 2nd point of 17 priorities of SDGs and it reflects that people really aware to solve every issue related with it. Many efforts have been executed to boost and encourage our agriculture business. The main reason is to level up our farmer’s quality and demand new innovation from them.
The perception of people nowadays settle down under the idea that most of farmers have lack of education, less capacity to access information and technology system and unable to engage with elites since they just don’t know how and why it’s important. However, we should put our concern into the idea that farmers are the only one hero who strive hardly providing rice, corn, soybean, chili and other food material we consume every single day.
Unfortunately, according to the fact that most of farmers are dominated by senior citizen and those who unable to access digital information, we need to recover the matter and invigorate the farmers. Now, almost all millennials prefer study about technology to agriculture, then this can be a win-win solution to utilize technology for leveling up agriculture sector. But, don’t worry, we still have many Gen Y and Z who put their interest in agriculture as well.
Look at how impactful enough the role of technology in our current daily basis such as transportation, communication, information, education and so on. Those sectors have accelerated into higher places because of technology. As an expression to respect the farmers, I guess we can accommodates their needs by giving new innovation to their job. Providing IT access and an easiness to sustain their business are more than enough.
The question is, how and why we need to respect farmers? Here they are several reasons that can be references for you to put more respect toward farmers.
- Farmer plays role as field supervisor
Farmer works in the field and they know every single condition within the field. Thus, I believe this situation drives them to act as supervisor in the real life. Becoming farmer doesn’t mean they don’t have role in the nation, because they are the one who have access to control and supervise the reality inside the farm. It’s not easy to manage field since you have to deal with plant disease and any other risks that would come.
They support back-to-nature concept
They support back-to-nature concept for tourism. Even if this isn’t directly connected to agriculture sector but farmer still drives this opportunity. Modern urban people prefer to spend their time of having experience inside of the village. Connect with nature and engage with locals are their alternative to have sweet escape from exhaustion. They contribute to the SDGs
Talking about SDGs, farmer has big role inside this development goal. Imagine. Who will dig the land, plant the commodities and manage the field? I would say they are the farmers itself. It’s hard but sometimes they don’t have any choice
I wouldn’t say that they are voluntarily choosing the job. Living in the village, born in the farmer family isn’t even a choice. Just like you who were born as rich or poor. However, this is regardless the background. Sometimes, farmer was born that way and they just need to work to gain income. Since villages have great potential to do farming then they choose to do it. I guess, through this answer we really need to appreciate all types of profession including being farmer itself. They are truly inspiration of the generation
If I ask about who wants to be a farmer? Is there any millennial willing to answer “Yes I want”? Well, can’t guarantee that. As modern generation who lives under the exposure of technology we should appreciate everything around us. Not to mention respecting what has been done by farmer. They are not our food machine, they work really hard to support their financial and indirectly support the sustainability of our needs. Thus, respecting their effort through providing IT access for them is absolutely nice.
