Sock Making - 24 October 2024

in #knittinglast month (edited)

I’ve now finished this pair of socks I wrote about here. I’m really happy I’ve knitted a pair in less than 2 months and that I know I don’t have to unravel or change the pattern instructions half way.

While knitting that pair I was looking forward to starting this new pair of socks because last time I went to Lidl’s supermarket I managed to find some sock yarn. It came in packs of two 100g balls. The 200g pack cost £4.99, around 30 Steem, and they had an offer: you could buy two packs, ie 400g, for £7 or 42 Steem. This was a very good price as normally sock yarn with 75% wool and 25% polyamide prices will start at £6.28 per 100g here or a bit over 36 Steem. You can make an adult pair of socks with 100g.

That’s one of the packs I bought. One of the colours is self-striping and the other colour is plain. Inside that big label there are instructions on how to make a pair of socks with precise numbers of stitches to cast on depending on one's shoe size. I’m not even going to attempt following the instructions because they vary a bit from my current winning formula.

The photo above shows the sort of patterning the yarn makes by itself. I love that changing design and colour coordination. I don’t have to plan anything while knitting and the variation adds interest. I'm interested to see how different the design of the second sock will be.

Interestingly the label says that it’s ‘non-felting’ which means that the socks should not shrink. This is a very good point that I’m also eager to put to the test.

I haven't counted how many pairs of socks I've knitted this year, but I reckon it's between 4 or 5 pairs. One of my favourite You Tube channels, The Crazy Sock Lady, has knitted 72 pairs so far this year. I only knit one pair at a time but that puts my sock making into perspective. I don't see this hobby as a competition but that shows how productive one can be !

In her latest podcast she also refers to a free bookmark pattern that looks very simple to make and it also uses sock yarn so that would be a good way to use left-overs.
