According to Reuters, North Korea’s top leader Kim Jong-un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in agreed in a letter to restore relations, improving the prospects for a breakthrough in the long deadlock in nuclear negotiations.
The South Korean President’s Office stated in a statement on Monday that since April this year, Moon Jae-in and Kim Jong-un have exchanged personal letters on several occasions to communicate on improving relations between South Korea and North Korea. The resumption of communication channels between South Korea and North Korea is also the result of negotiations between the two leaders.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the chief secretary of South Korea’s Blue House and People’s Communication, Park Soo-hyun, said at a press conference that morning that South Korea and North Korea restarted the communication channel at 10 am local time.
It is reported that on June 9 last year, North Korea unilaterally cut off all communication channels between South Korea and North Korea, including the communication channel of Panmunjom, on the grounds of distributing anti-North Korea flyers by some of the South Korean citizen groups.
