7 killed as nor’wester lashes Nilphamari
Seven people including an infant were killed when a nor’wester lashed Domar and Jaldhaka upazilas in Nilphamari last night.
Of the deceased, four -- Afiza Rahman, 50, Abdul Gani, 45, Khadija Begum, 46, Jamirul Islam,12, -- were from Domar while three -- Samia Begum, 27, and her three- months-old baby Moni and Ashikur rahman, 22, -- were from Jaldhaka.
In Domar upazila, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Umme Fatima told our correspondent that Abdul Gani, a farmer, died when a tree fell on his house during the storm around 9:00pm.
Victim Khadija, a housewife, and Jamirul died on the spot while trees fell on them during the storm in Chilahati and Vogdapuri , said the UNO.
In another incident at Botolganj village, Afiza Rahman, a shopkeeper, died when her tin-shed shop collapsed on her when the nor’wester hit the area.
In Jaldhaka upazila, Samia Begum and her three-month-old daughter Moni were killed as their house collapsed on them around 10:00pm after a tree fell on the house during the storm, said Mostafizar Rahman, officer-in-charge of Jaldhaka Police Station.
Shopkeeper Ashikur died on the spot when a tree collapsed on his shop located in Purba Shimulbari village.
A huge amount of paddy was damaged in the areas of the two upazilas last night due to the storm.
