KELSEY MITCHELL BREAKS OHIO STATE SCORING RECORD AS BUCKEYES DOWN FLORIDA 103-77
Kelsey Mitchell owns yet another Ohio State record, and this one is a big one, as the Buckeye senior broke the school's all-time scoring record with a 30-point performance in the team's 103-77 win over Florida on Wednesday night.
Mitchell passed Jantel Lavender on the school's all-time scoring list and now has 2,840 total points in her career. This record is just another notch in a storied and decorated career for Mitchell. She already owns the program's top-two scoring seasons, breaking the record as a freshman and topping that mark again as a sophomore.
She also owns the school record for points in a game with 48, the school record for most 40-point games, and earlier this season, Mitchell broke the NCAA record for all-time three-pointers made.
Her performance on Wednesday night helped lift Ohio State past Florida. Mitchell led the way with 30 points, but was far from the only Buckeye finding the bottom of the net. All five starters reached double digits, including Sierra Calhoun, who shook a slumpy few weeks with a 21-point performance against the Gators.
As a team, Ohio State shot 54 percent from the field and 36 percent from three, which was enough to overcome an eight-board rebounding deficit. No Buckeye reached double figures on the boards as both Linnae Harper and Stephanie Mavunga – who are averaging double-doubles this season – finished with nine each.Much of Ohio State's success on Wednesday came from aggressive defense. The Buckeyes forced 24 Gator turnovers with their press, scoring 42 points off of those turnovers compared to Florida's 11 off of Ohio State turnovers. The Buckeyes are next in action of Friday when they host Dartmouth in Columbus at 7 p.m.
