Kate and her husband, Prince William, ventured out of their Kensington Palace home on Tuesday to attend an event at Basildon Sporting Centre, in Essex.
The pair spoke to workers from an apprenticeship programme called Coach Core, which aims to help young people without prior education or relevant training to get in to sports coaching.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge immersed themselves into an array of sporting games with the students.
Kate tried her hand at tennis while William was spotted hurling javelins, as the pair interacted with the eager youth who arrived at Basildon Sporting Centre.
The Coach Core scheme, which is part of the Royal Foundation, hosts students as young as 16, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to progress further into a sports career.
During the visit, Kate received a warm welcoming a hug from a royal fan, Janet Emery.
As the Duchess hugged Janet back, she revealed an important tip that she often tells her two eldest children, George and Charlotte.
Kate said: "Hugs are very important. That’s what I tell my children."
Like her sister-in-law Meghan, Kate has broken with royal tradition by hugging her fans.
The Duchess has a notably soft spot for children, and has only recently started embracing her adoring young fans while on royal duties.
Earlier this week, Kate hugged a group of children outside the Basildon Sporting Centre, who waited patiently to catch a glimpse of the royal couple.
The Duchess appears to have adopted a "Meghan-style" approach to her fans, after the American royal was seen hugging numerous fans during her 16-day royal tour in Australia, Newz New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga.
