Petra is top of the list of places I have seen on my travels. It is mind blowing. I can't believe there was a flash flood when you went. It was about 35 degrees when I visited and no sign of water :)
It's definitely in my top three along with Macchu Picchi and the northern lights in Finland.
According to wiki flash floods happen quite often but the locals say this one was once in a don't know how many years heavy. Think I have a video somewhere, need to dig that out for when I get round to do my post
