Do I Really Want to Work For You?

So the time has finally come. I was offered a position at the post office as a temporary mail carrier. It had taken about 6 weeks to finally be given a start date, even though the man that was hiring made this job sound like it was the worst possible job on the Earth. He obviously has never been a social worker before.

I was really excited to get hired on with the post office. Here are all of the pros that I see to having this type of job.

  1. You work independently. You are just sent out on your route and you do your job without having to check in with someone on a regular basis. This is very similar to the Social Work jobs that I have done in the past. I tried to take on a position as a secretary in a pediatrician office, but had to quit because the supervisor was breathing down my neck every 5 minutes. I need a position where I can be trusted to take bathroom breaks and do my job. This seems perfect.

  2. Low or no stress. Seriously, what could be the stress issues that you run into with the position like this? It seems so easy that anybody can do it. I am a bit upset that I am not utilizing my college degree that I worked so hard for, but I'm looking at this position as a way to get my foot in the door. So although for the next year I will be delivering mail, the position that it is going to lead to will be a position i really want.

  3. This job incorporates tons of walking. The man that hired me said that we can expect to walk up to 10 miles. I saw this as an opportunity to get paid to work out. Hell yeah i will take a paycheck to get in shape!

  4. This is a federal government job. Benefits, pension, medical, all is stellar. You cant fet any better than this folks.

Now, for the cons....

  1. Where is the bathroom?

  2. How do you eat lunch? I imagine that you dont really have the time to go somewhere. Packing a lunch that doesnt need to be refrigerated seems like it will be hard. Do they only eat chips and granola bars?

  3. The guy who hired me said not to call in sick. He said, go in, throw up in the trash and get sent home. This wont count against me then. I have chronic pain issues. Am i going to get penalized if i have to go to the hospital? I go about once a month. I also had plans to go on vacation in October. Am i not going to get to go?

  4. The guy who hired me said we work 15 hour days and sonetimes work 13 days in a row. This cant be possible. There is no way the government would be cool with all that overtime. Im not working for free, i did enough of that in child welfare.

  5. Blisters from walking. Normally when you get blisters you can take the next day off to rest, or take it easy. I wont be able to. This worries me.

If anyone has i formation to helo me with these questions, i would appreciate it!
