East River by Sholem Asch

I found this at a Goodwill, and it's a well written book from 1946, about the life by NYC's East River, a community of immigrants, circa 1910. As with Asch's other books, religion, particularly Judaism, pervades this story about multicultural life.

A quick look for his books shows hundreds of copies of his other works, a couple dozen of East River. Asch's books were generally exploring the Bible, particularly the New Testament. This got him in trouble with The Forward, the Jewish paper, which kicked his column out of the paper. His entire life was like that: always getting in trouble for pushing boundaries.

I've seen this up for auction for a few dollars. It's not necessarily an expensive book, but if you need it immediately, it can be pricey.
