My entry to the supernatural writing contest by @jerrybanfield @gmichelbkk

My childhood was fun. If wishes were horses, would be a freaking horse ridder. I would go back to being a child without looking back. However, many strange things happened to me as a child, I can't explain why I experienced a large percentage of these weird occurences unlike other kids. Probably one day I would know the reason. But as a young adult now, the only inexplicable experience I've had was one evening, my parents weren't around, just I and my kid sister and my dogs were barking excessively so I came outside to check out what the reason was. To my greatest surprise, when I opened the front door to scold them, I realised the three dogs were even sleeping deeply under one of the cars. I had to even call their names before they woke up then they ran towards my direction to jump on me as usual. My dogs are usually very light sleepers, a slight sound could wake them up from any sort of sleep unless they are really in deep slumber. This meant they were really far away in wonderland that I had to yell their names for them to be roused from that sleep, so who the hell was barking because the barks were very loud and clear not just that, the barks were coming from my compound.
I called out to my kid sister,
"Izuchi, why were the dogs barking? "
And she looked at me amazed
"Deedee, what's wrong with you.. No dogs were barking joor"
She laughed and told me I was loco.
Surprised right? My kid sis could be rude at times but I didn't really care at that moment. I was really concerned because the barks were very loud, so how come my sister claimed to not have heard it.
Before this incident occured, the previous week, one of my dogs called Samson- We gave it this name because it was the strongest of all the dogs( you know Samson from the bible) and the most active. The alpha male of the pack, first to bark when visitors come, first to bark when a car drives into our compound, first in every thing, first to bark when the tank was full when we were pumping water. The dominant male, it made sure it established it's territory by urinating at certain areas of the compound. Really gross! But what could we do, it's all part of natural selection crap, survival of the fittest.
PicsArt_1446665388884.jpgWell, Samson became ill, it stopped eating food which was very weird because Samson was a voracious eater. I used to say Samson had an eating disorder because it ate like an autistic kid, it could eat any damn thing except faeces of course. My dogs aren't savages. All of a sudden, samson stopped eating, started losing weight and the other dog- Jack became the alpha male. Jack dominated most areas of my compound with it's urine because Samson failed to meet up due to it's illness. My dad kept on taking it to the vet, samson was anemic. How do you know when a dog is anemic? By looking at the inner part of it's ears, the red mucosa becomes pale. Samson became well at last and continued it's normal overactive lifestyle.
One morning, we were going out. We saw Samson lying down close to the grass. My kid sis called out to Samson because normally it would be the firsf to greet us in the morning. But Samson didn't move, we ran up to that spot and discovered a lifeless and stiff body.
We wailed!!!
We cried our eyes out.
Mum wasnt around because she travelled and dad warned us not to say a word to mum till she came back.
That night I twisted and turned. If someone told me I could get all emotional over a dog, I would have protested in disbelief.
But here I was crying like a teen who just had her heart broken for the first time.
I couldn't sleep at all, I was in pains, my throat hurt. So our beloved Samson was gone. Who would bark when strangers come knocking, who would tell us when the water tank had filled when we were pumping water. No more big black mighty Samson. The death of a dog is a really terrible experience. That night was a really tough night for me
My house was very quiet, my dad was quiet, my three remaining dogs were quiet too.. It was a gloomy period for everybody. Then mama finally came back. Big strong superhuman mother, couldn't believe she could shed a tear because she was always the
strongest, always tough! That was the first time in years I had seen my mum cry. The last time she cried was when grandmum passed away, since then her eyes are as dry as the Sahara.
Mum was actually crying, Mumywhatsapp 20170617_235119.jpgI knew she loved the dogs but I didn't know it was to this extent. She could wake up as early as 4 am to cook food for these dogs, she would always ask if the dogs had eaten. But she never let them jump on her and never cuddled them. Mum is a clean addict, she has phobia for germs. Lol.. My dad used to tease her when we were younger that she had some form of OCD.. Lol. So she never pet the dogs because of fear of getting a zoonotic disease.
After some time, we moved on. But back to my encounter. Could it be the barks I was hearing was from the dead Samson, perhaps that's why I couldn't see where the bark was from and the strange part was that my sister didn't hear nothing. Well I can't tell
Back to my childhood experience. I used to go out to play outside the house. Whenever it was time for supper, mama would scream my name.
"D. D, dinner is ready"
Dd is what everyone calls me at home though, the name came about when my elder sister was watching Dexter's laboratory on cartoon network, Dexter had a kid sister who kept on trying to ruin his laboratory. Didi was very naughty so because I was also naughty, my elder sister started calling me Didi and then my parents joined in. That name has followed me till date. But when I entered high school, I threw the name away, only a few close peeps and fam still call me didi, every other person calls me Daisy.
Daisy: Then one day, I went out to play, mama called me.. I ran inside into the kitchen. Yes mum!!!
Nobody was in the kitchen
I ran upstairs and asked
"Mummy, did you call me" and mum said "No, I didn't"
Mum would then call me again at that same time and tell me to re answer. She said myths had it that it was the spirits calling out my name and answering them could cause them to take you to their world. But if she called out to me a second time, this time for real. It could reverse whatever call I answered at first.
This was very weird because this scenario occured on two more occasions. I would hear my mother's voice, answer then run inside the house but mum would say she didn't call me.
My mum told me that I shouldn't answer any call again instead I should get into the house, when I see her then I could answer. I didn't hear such calls anymore.
I had another weird experience, don't know if I would include such as supernatural. I had an imaginary friend, Jake whom I used to discuss with frequently. And I didn't see that as abnormal at that stage of my life. However, when I turned nine, I stopped hearing the voice of my imaginary friend. Can't tell why.
Now, in college I'm taking a psychiatry course and I'm wondering-Could it be I was schizophrenic as a kid because of the voices I could hear-auditory hallucination of some sort but because I had a normal thought process and my cognitive abilities were completely normal then it wasn't schizophrenia.
It was a somewhat supernatural encounter and now I'm grown it feels really creepy thinking about what I had experienced back then as a child.
