時計というものは不思議なもので、時間を伝えるというシンプルな目的は一緒でも表示方法は様々です。
そこで、目的とデザインが素晴らしく共鳴しているスイス鉄道時計を見ていきたいと思います。

#2スイス鉄道時計

腕時計で見たことある人も多いのではないでしょうか。
この時計はスイス連邦鉄道(SBB)が1944年から採用している大きな掛け時計です。(デザイナーはHans Hilfiker)
遠くから見てもハッキリと視認できるようにする意図が存分に盛り込まれています。

文字盤は無く、真っ白な盤面上にある12本の強烈な太線と目盛が際立ちます。
長針は時刻目盛を覆うように長く、短針は言うほど短くはない、針の太さで長針と短針を判別できるようになっていますね。
秒針は目立つ赤だけど太さはかなり細く先端は赤い丸。時計の存在を上品に目立たせていて、コンポジションのようです。

これらをよく考えてみると、長さで視認させるのではなく太さで視認させようとしているのが分かりますね。斜めから見ても視認性が良いのはこの為です。

時刻調整の制約から生まれたStop to Goという0秒時に秒針が一時停止する機能も美しく感じるのは綺麗なデザインの時計だからこそではないでしょうか。(Stop to Goの動画)

I wonder if there are many people who have seen it with a wrist watch.
This watch is a big wall clock that the Swiss Federal Railway (SBB) has adopted since 1944. (Designer is Hans Hilfiker)
