Tofuya Ukai Owada - Edo Period Dining In Hachioji
Tofuya Ukai Owada is a tofu restaurant in Western Tokyo. What makes this place special is it's home made tofu and it's beautiful setting. The restaurant is built around a courtyard of koi ponds and traditional Japanese landscaping. The buildings are straight out of the Edo period, both inside and outside which makes for a pleasant, relaxing meal.
As I mentioned Tofuya is a tofu restaurant . They offers course meals only, but at $40 - $50 it's within most people's budgets. Each course is a small sampling of various dishes including tofu, sashimi and other traditional Japanese dishes. The tofu is delicious, but if you are a Westerner and decide to visit be prepared for traditional Japanese flavors.
After you order, grab a drink and take in the beautiful surroundings. You are transported back 200 years to the time of Wabi-sabi, ukiyo-e and lords and ladies. I have to say, out of all of the places I have been around Tokyo, this restaurant and it's garden was one of the most relaxing and pleasant. I found my self constantly looking out the windows taking everything in.
If you are in Tokyo and looking for an authentic, Edo period dinning experience Tofuya is it. It's a located in Hachioji, about a 45min train ride from Shinjuku station to Hachioji station and then transfer to the Hachiko line for 1 stop or take a taxi for a few minutes.

That's a lovely location, but what currency are you talking about? If it's USD (which I guess it isn't), its very expensive!!!!
Yen of course, but equivalent of USD. Keep in mind this is a once or twice a year place to eat at, not your everyday dinning. It really is worth the cost.
