Jabodetabek is an acronym from Jakarta-Bogor-Depok-Tangerang-Bekasi, which is a megapolitan area of Jakarta and its surroundings. Before the establishment of Depok City as a division of Bogor Regency, the acronym is Jabotabek.
Of the total population estimated at 17.9 million people live in Jakarta, 10.7 million people in Bekasi, 10.4 million people in Tangerang, and 10.6 million people in Bogor. This population increases every year due to the large urbanization of the entire territory of Indonesia. The Indonesian government projects that Jabodetabek population will reach 40 million people by 2016. According to the statistics, Jakarta will have 18 million people and its buffer zones have 25 million people.
The equivalent of the term in English is Greater Jakarta which means an urban area integrated with Jakarta. Its population in 2005 is estimated at 18.5 million people, placing it as one of the top ten metropolitan areas in the world and in Indonesia. It is also the largest metropolitan area in Southeast Asia.
In 2000, the number of trips in Jabotabek was 29.2 million trips / day. Percentage of transportation mode used: bus 52.7%; private car 30.8%; motorcycle 14.2%; and railway 2%. The commuter phenomenon from Botabek to Jakarta relies heavily on electric railway facilities and toll road networks. Currently, between Jakarta and Botabek areas have been linked by several toll road networks, among others:
- Cawang toll road - Bogor - Ciawi
- Cawang toll road - Cikampek
- Tomang toll road - Merak
- Jakarta Inner Ringroad Toll Road (Inner Ring)
- Pluit Toll Road - Soekarno-Hatta Airport
- Jakarta Outer Ringroad Toll Road (Outer Ring)
- JORR - Serpong Toll Road 15 km
Since 1977, the Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta has determined that the Bodetabek area as a buffer zone of Jakarta city. This is due to the overcrowding of Jakarta to accommodate all government, trade and industry activities. Based on this the government began to regulate the development and designation of the area in Jabotabek. For government activities, it is concentrated in Central Jakarta. In 1995, President Soeharto once planned to move the central government of the country to Jonggol [need referral] area in Bogor district. But the idea was unavailable due to the financial crisis that hit Indonesia in 1997.
For industry, development is concentrated in Cibitung and Cikarang (Bekasi) and Cikupa (Tangerang). For settlements, large developers build many satellite cities equipped with city support facilities such as schools, shopping centers, hospitals and entertainment venues. These satellite cities are widely developed in the city of Bekasi, Tangerang City, Serpong (South Tangerang City), Depok City and Cibubur Area.
