Garda lake - Lago di Garda

This year I spent Ferragosto at Garda lake, Italy. Ferragosto is a national holiday in my country and it falls on 15th August, the day of the Assumption. Its origin are more related to a Augusto emperor who created this festivity to give farmers a day to rest after the harvests. Then when Christianism became the dominant religion, they converted this date for the Assumption since people were used to it (a lot of Christian festivities are related to roman ones).

The tradition to go on a trip that day begun during Fascist regime. Mussolini made train and tickets cheaper that day giving the possibility to people to go on holiday and visit all part of Italy.
If Ferragosto fell on friday or saturday, they did a whole weekend on rest like we do nowadays.

In the lasts years if you want to go on holiday for Ferragosto you need to travel before august 15 since there aren't trains and busses as the other days . You will also spend a lot of money too in those days, hotels become more expensive because many families can spend holidays only when factories closes at the beginning of august and it's the last chance to gain money.

This year I chose to spent Ferragosto to Garda lake, which is at 1 hour and half from my house by car. I left early in the morning to find free parking lots near Cala de Or, a shore not far from Desenzano.
That day was so hot and beautifull, there were a lot of people. I found a family from Cuba and I spent the day with them.
In the afternoon I dance a bit when the group dances started. It was so funny.

Quest'anno ho festeggiato Ferragosto al lago di Garda. Tutti sappiamo quando cade Ferragosto, ma sapete le sue origini? Il 15 agosto è il giorno dell'Assunzione, ma ai tempi dei romani questo giorno faceva parte delle feriae auguste, delle giornate di ferie istituite dall'imperatore Augusto per dare la possibilità ai contadini di riposarsi dopo i raccolti. Quando il cristianesimo ha preso piede, questa data è stata convertita a quella dell'Assunzione.

La tradizione di andare in gita o in ferie per Ferragosto risale però al Fascismo. Mussolini aveva pensato di abbassare i prezzi dei biglietti e creare dei treni turistici in questa data per permettere alle famiglie più povere di visitare l'Italia. Se ferragosto cadeva di venerdì o sabato aveva pensato a pacchetti vacanza di 3 giorni sempre a prezzi ridotti.

Negli ultimi anni per passare questa data fuori casa bisogna partire qualche giorno prima dato che treni e autubus vengono cancellati nei giorni di festa. C'è anche da essere disposti a spendere di più, si sa che ad agosto chiudono le fabbriche e molte famiglie vanno in vacanza ad inizio agosto per la gioia degli alberghi che rincarano i prezzi.

Quest'anno sono andata a Cala de or, un impianto nei pressi di Desenzano. Il lago di Garda dista un'ora e mezza da casa mia così sono potuta andare e tornare in giornata.
Sono partita presto la mattina per trovare parcheggio e ombrelloni. Là ho conosciuto una famiglia cubana e ho passato il giorno con loro. Uno di loro era il DJ e al pomeriggio ho partecipato all'animazione coi balli di gruppo. é stata proprio una bella giornata.
