Napoleon's treasure
In the summer of 1812, sitting on the banks of the Niemen River, 600.000 men waited for the order to start off. Soon, that order would arrive ... he had organized everything. His biggest dream was about to happen and nobody could have stopped him.
Napoleon Bonaparte gave the order to go on the march. The Russian campaign had begun.
Knowing that he could not face the French in one great battle, the Russians decided to withdraw. Houses and crops were burned, nothing had to be left to the French.
The great Napoleonic army met little resistance and in September of 1812 managed to reach Moscow. However, the long forced marches, the scorching heat, the violent storms and the lack of food made the soldiers restless.
On 15 September 1812 the French soldiers entered the city, they found it abandoned and the few people who remained were old and sick.
The next morning at dawn, fire broke out in Moscow. High flames rose from the buildings and a thick blanket of black smoke covered everything. The soldiers dispersed throughout the city and entered the houses began to plunder them.
The booty was enormous ... 200 wagons were loaded with gold, silver, jewels and precious paintings. Even the great golden crucifix of the bell tower of "Ivan the Terrible" was stolen.
After the Moscow fire, Napoleon decided to return to France. The great army traveled the Staraja Smolenskaja, towards Smolensk, suffering hunger, frost and attacks of Cossack cavalry. And it is right along the Staraja Smolenskaja that the 200 wagons disappeared and were never found again
