UNWISE WORDS FROM THE WASHINGTON POST'S EDITORIAL BOARD:
“We have long supported a two-state solution to the Mideast conflict, with a viable Palestinian state coexisting next to a secure Israel.“
That sounds as if just might be workable – if only someone could :
- define what a “viable Palestinian state” would look like; and
- clarify how the existence of “a secure Israel” could be guaranteed if it borders a Palestinian state whose inhabitants still want “their” land back and still hope, one day, to “reclaim” it.
Notice that the WaPo editorial board does not call for a “peaceful” Palestinian state or even a Palestinian state that recognizes and accepts the existence of the state of Israel. “Coexisting next to” does NOT necessarily imply or require a long-term commitment to live at peace with “the other.”
If the WaPo editorial board truly seeks a peaceful solution to the conflict, it might, instead, call for Palestinian acceptance of the legitimacy of the State of Israel. WaPo could also call for Israeli acceptance of the legitimacy of a newly-created Palestinian state.
It would be foolhardy of Israel’s political leaders to accept the creation of a sovereign Palestinian state absent an unequivocal Palestinian commitment to accept and recognize not only the existence of but also the LEGITIMACY of the State of Israel.
