Island is a form of geography scattered across the earth, a piece of land located in the middle of an area of water surrounded by all sides. The island may be a small land that can not be more than several meters or can extend to many kilometers. This island may itself be a continent or an independent state, and a group of islands can form a whole country, the so-called archipelago. In terms of their types, there are six different types of islands: continental, barrier, mermaid, island, coral, oceanic and artificial.

Greenland is the largest island in the world, and the second largest ice sheet in the world after Antarctica. Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and its successor, but has enjoyed self-governing rule since 1979 and its system of parliamentary democracy. The capital city of Greenland is the city of Nuk, divided into four municipalities: Kogalak, Kaswitsub, Kikata and Sirmersuk. Greenland was named by the Irish adventurer Eric Thorvaldson (Erik Red) in 985 to attract settlers to the island
